Not knowing much music theory or anything about the way guitars are made I searched the web for guitar tuning methods that would make each note sound as close to being in tune as possible. (Maybe one day I can put a Buzz Feiten on my guitars) So here is what I found that worked well, I am not sure who to give the credit to as I can't remember where I got the info from...

The best way I have found to tune is to tune my A string to a tuning fork (I use a guitar tuner). I then tune all of the strings to that, using the "A" on each string (the fifth fret on the E strings, the seventh fret on the D string, the second fret on the G string, and the 10th fret on the B string). I finish up, and stretch the tuning a little, by playing a very angular E power chord which uses all six strings (O-7-9-9-12-12).

...This method seems to work really well. My acoustic guitar gave me real problems near the nut on the higher strings using normal tuning. This method has really helped that out a bunch.

It's sounds silly, but if I want to tune my guitar in standard keyboard tune, I always sing a song that usually played on G. I can sing out G very easy and it's always correct without any help from tuning gadget. After that, jst tune the other melody using this G  cheers.

I use a Sonic Research Turbo Tuner. It is a true strobe tuner and is the best tuner I have ever used. I have the ST-200 which is the pedal version.

 guitar guitar

I just cheat!!!! My Boos GT-6 has an onboard tuner so I just use that, and my acoustic has an electic pickup as well so if anything needs tuning I just plug in. It also works for any altered tunings. cheers
